Valentine’s Day Ideas You Can Find Downtown

Love is always in the air downtown, it’s truly a romantic destination. You’ve got the obvious wins with amazing restaurants, luxurious hotels, world class spas and shopping that rivals anything you can find in any city.

I’m going to do you a favour and narrow it down a little with “Valentine’s Day ideas you can find downtown”.

Let’s start with entertainment.

  • Winnipeg Art Gallery has a “Maker” series class on. Create your own succulent garden. Go home with something cool that you created, and make a lasting memory.,event/1059/makerlab-terrariums
  • Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be showcasing some of their up and coming talent and choreography. Be in the know on this world class dancing troupe.
  • The Jets have home games on the 13th and the 16th. It’s not on the 14th, but if you are a sport loving couple, this is a pretty awesome answer.

Food? We have got you covered downtown!

  • East India Company will never ever let you down. It’s delicious and a staple in the downtown of Winnipeg. Their buffet has butter chicken, nothing says love like butter chicken.
  • The Merchant Kitchen also can feed you right. They’ve got a fantastic menu, and if I may be so bold, try out their fried chicken, it is sure to light your passion.
  • Earl’s Main Street location doesn’t get enough love. They will consistently feed you well, give you some of the best wine on the market, and ensure you have a great start or end to your evening. Always a fan favourite.
  • Affinity Vegetarian Garden is always an amazing option. The food is absolutely delicious, and as the name suggests, vegetarian friendly. This is one of those can’t miss restaurants that sets Winnipeg apart.

If you want a simple night of dinner and an activity, we have got you covered. Of course, there is the next level of romance and that’s a staycation. Yes, we have you covered there as well in downtown Winnipeg.

  • Fort Gary Hotel and Ten Spa are regularly offering amazing packages. Add to that a morning at Yoga Public and you could be on the path to a fantastic Valentine’s Day.
  • Inn At The Forks and Riverstone Spa pair together beautifully. You can spend the day at the Forks eating and shopping and then pass the evening away at the spa. If that doesn’t set up the most magical night, well, I don’t know what would.

You really can’t go wrong downtown in Winnipeg. Of course, you can make at simple as a couple drinks at Brown’s Social House, The Pint, Rudy’s Eat and Drink or La Roca. Mix that with a walk at the Forks, and dinner at any one of the other amazing restaurants downtown and you’ve got the perfect night in the Peg. Love is always in the air, you just have to go see for yourself.

Did we mention the coffee shops? No, no we didn’t. We’ve got those as well.

Will you be my Valentine?

It’s that time of year again, and even though I’m still searching for my special someone I can still have a little (or a lot of) Valentine’s Day fun downtown.

Dinner & a Movie

What better way to jump-start your inner romantic than watch everyone’s favourite Canadian couple fall in love.

The Notebook

That’s right. The MET will be showing The Notebook on Wednesday, February 10 from 5-9:30pm, so gather your girls for some pre-Galentine’s Day fun. Tickets are $35 and include dinner, popcorn, and all the Ryan Gosling you can handle. And if you’re looking for another timeless love story, The MET is playing Casablanca on Sunday, February 14 from 5-9:30pm.

Scary & Sentimental

Who says Valentine’s Day has to be sweet? Check out the St. Valentine’s Horror Con, February 13 and 14 at the RBC Convention Centre. There will be horror-related comics, costumes, and collectibles and of course a few horror film screenings to keep you scarred and cuddled around your sweetheart. Tickets start at just $10.

Love & Live Theatre

Impress your friends—or your fella—with your love affair with the theatre! The Things We Do For Love takes the stage at the Royal MTC’s Tom Hendry Warehouse Theatre from now until February 20. Tickets start at $22.

feast with goddessesDine like a Goddess

Is there anything more romantic than Aphrodite, the God of love herself? If you haven’t had a chance to check out the WAG’s Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin exhibit yet, why not attend their Special Edition Valentine’s Day Feast with Gods & Goddesses. Tickets are $80 for Members, $85 for Non-members and include a three-course exhibition-inspired dinner and a visit to the exhibit.

Have you heard that the Fairmont Winnipeg’s VG Restaurant has been named one of the most romantic restaurants in Canada? If you haven’t already made your reservation for their Aphrodisiac Valentine’s Day Dinner, get on it! Tickets start at $80 per person and after the news of their lovebird location, I wouldn’t wait too long to get yours.

All’s fair in Love & Hockey

Valentine’s Day is about sharing the love. Catch a Manitoba Moose game at the MTS Centre at 2pm on February 14 and a portion of each ticket sold in P2 or P3 will be donated to KidSport Manitoba. Tickets start $17, and who doesn’t feel good about helping kids play!

Fresh air & Free!

Like any proud Winnipegger, I love a good discount. And after a long work week indoors, I NEED to get outside. Valentine’s Day at The Forks is my perfect solution. Whether you’re drinking hot chocolate, or checking out the warming huts, is there anything more romantic than skating hand-and-hand down the Red River Mutual Trail?

Get your girls. Grab your guy. Get out there. And remember love, you can #finditdowntown.

Show downtown some love!

Whether you have several, one, none or only potential Valentines this Valentine’s day, why don’t you take a little time out of your day and show a little love for the heart of the city, my home and yours: downtown.

This week, swing by my Valentine-making space on the second level of Portage Place (where the Lennard Taylor Launch It! shop used to be). There you’ll find all kinds of Valentine’s Day activities including craft supplies, retro love songs on vinyl and a bunch of contests to enter.

Stop by and make a Valentine and let me know what you love most about downtown Winnipeg, or make one ahead of time and drop it off.

A non-traditional Valentine’s Day – Mardi Gras!

470506_10150691495127114_303838264_oBy non-traditional , that means 1) no one-on-one candlelit dinners in romantic restaurants and 2) no sitting at home on your couch with Ben and Jerry.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with either option – hey, I’ve indulged in both. This is for those that might be looking for, y’know, a bit of a change this year. Something a little spicier to do!

February 14th, the RBC Convention Centre is hosting their annual Mardi Gras! If you’re up for something different, here’s 5 reasons you it might be just your flavour:

  1. The music – Zydeco tunes to get you dancing all night long! (if, like me, you just discovered Zydeco, I’ll save you the trouble of googling. Here’s the wiki!)
  2. Louisiana foodie treats – some of which I guarantee you’ve never tried. Jambalaya, gumbo, crocodile fritters, Bourbon flamed garlic pepper shrimp, and an oyster bar!
  3. Entertainment – it’s about more than just music, they’ve got showgirls, showBOYS and a Mardi Gras Parade to entertain you!
  4. Feel the burn – the drink of the night is cinnamon whisky shooters! I’m not at all confident I’ll be trying more than one, but I’m going to give it a shot!
  5. It runs till 2am – so even if you’ve already got plans, there’s always time to stop by for a dance and some beads before or after!

cuisine-01-largeYou’ve got to be 18 to enter (the cinnamon shooters probably gave that away) – tickets are just $16!

And….I’ve got tickets to give away! Let me know in the comments the food you want to try most, and you’re entered!

Love is in the air

Peggy_Web_valentines_squareIt’s  a week until Valentine’s Day! For me this year, that means treating my single self to a night out with the girls and yummy chocolate martinis. But if you’ve got someone special you want to spend the evening with, well, that’s awesome news and I want to help spread the love around a little bit. So I’ve come up with a few potential downtown dates for Valentine’s Day!

  1. Romance the Downtown Red
Take yourselves on a mini-retreat with a night’s stay at the Fort Garry hotel – wake up late, and indulge in their legendary Sunday brunch. And grab some classic red roses from Fresh Cuts to cap it off!
  2. Sinful
Feeling like making the ultimate commitment? Try getting a tattoo together at Metamorphosis Custom Tattoo and Body Piercing. Since you’re already feeling a little on the naughty side, grab dinner at Dessert Sinsations, try some smokin’ heels on at ShoeNet! For flowers, I’m thinking something a little more modern from Fresh Cuts – lilies? Gerbera daisies in hot pink?
  3. For the Love of the Game
This day should be about the person you love – and if that person is a sports lover, then here’s the plan: Get them decked out in that official Jets jersey they’ve been coveting, plus accessories like hat and scarf from Uptown Sports. Take them out to cheer along with the crowd at Tavern United, and top it off with all white flowers from Fresh Cuts- nothing says Jets like a white out!
  4. Shine Bright Like a Diamond
Sparkle sparkle! Break out tickets to the Rihanna concert (it doesn’t happen till March 25th, but you can unwrap the gift Valentine’s Day!). Avoid the rush by coming early for cocktails at Moxie’s in the MTS Centre, get some lovely flowers from Fresh Cuts and sneak a trinket from City Jewellers into the bouquet.
  5. The Art of Love
Make it a cultural evening – their choice of tickets to an exhibit at the WAG, or to a show at the PTE – after dinner at Mediterranean bistro Arkadash, and flowers from Fresh Cuts that are pure elegance.

So now you’ve got some ideas – but I’ve got one thing more! I’ll give one lucky winner their pick of these dates, on me – if you tell me in the comments the most romantic thing you’ve ever done for someone you love!

UPDATE: And the winner is…..drumroll….Joanne! For her romantic story of everything her husband does for her after 20 years together. So beautiful & sweet! Congrats Joanne and Jeff, I can’t wait to see which date you pick!
