Discovery of the Day: The Vinyl Vault

Just when I think I’ve explored all the hidden gems around me, I find a new one. Yesterday I discovered the Vinyl Vault for the first time, and I can’t believe I’ve never been there before. It turns out that the basement of the Power Building at 428 Portage holds the city’s largest used record collection – and the Vinyl Vault sale is your chance to rummage through it!

It’s run by the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, but the music spans all genres. I saw rock, jazz, country, Broadway, even kids’ music there – and all the records are priced at $2!

To find the Vault, you go to 428 Portage – a very ordinary-looking office building across from Portage Place –  and you’ll see a little stand-up sign outside advertising it. Go in and take the elevator down to the basement, and as soon as it opens you’ll see a rack of records and a table where a lovely gentleman will take your payment when you’re done. But where you really want to go is to the right just past his table. That’s the Vault – walls of floor-to-ceiling records carefully sorted by genre for your browsing pleasure! If you’re a vinyl fan, it’s way too easy to lose track of time – I spent most of my lunch hour there before I even realized it.

The Vault only opens once a month – it’s open right now 10 – 3 and will be again tomorrow, and then it shuts down again until September. Dates for the rest of the year/next year are: September 27, October 25, November 29, January 31, February 28, March 28, April 25, May 30, June 27

Happy hunting!

Dream the dream – Les Miz is coming!

Les_Mis_Static_Generic_squareIt was a book! Then a musical! Then a movie, another movie, and that last movie that we saw a bunch of at the Oscars this year! That’s right, it’s Les Miserables – and the musical, which never really stopped, because of its uber-popularity, is coming back to Winnipeg soon!

In fact, there’s a very special presale that’s going on for the next 2 days, just for you! So if you’re a fan, info is below!

Broadway Across Canada presents LES MISÉRABLES
Centennial Concert Hall,  July 23-28, 2013

Cameron Mackintosh presents a brand new 25th anniversary production of Boublil & Schönberg’s legendary musical, LES MISÉRABLES, with glorious new staging and dazzlingly reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. This new production has been acclaimed by critics, fans and new audiences and is breaking box office records wherever it goes. The New York Times calls this LES MISÉRABLES “an unquestionably spectacular production from start to finish.” The London Times hails the new show “a five star hit, astonishingly powerful.”

Your special presale dates are APRIL 18 & 19 (10am – 10pm)
Use the code: DAY

And just because it seems appropriate, here’s Susan Boyle singing I Dreamed a Dream.

Shopping, shopping and more shopping

Oh yes, it’s shopping season out there and I am having a great time.

On Saturday, I spent the day at The Forks market and managed to get a whole bunch of people crossed off my list. I picked up some beautiful handmade art for my mom from Pulse Gallery, a 3,000 piece puzzle for my dad from Kite and Kaboodle (which is actually kind of a gift for mom too since it keeps him out of her hair), Lego for my little brother and tons of chocolate and candy for stockings.

Inside, you’ll find tons and tons of great gift ideas; fantastic comfort food recipes from some of your favourite restaurants; festive drink ideas; and of course, my favourite part, a guide to shopping for everyone on your list this holiday season courtesy of yours truly. (Check out page 32!)

The magazine hits Winnipeg Liquor Marts across the city today and is now available in the downtown walkway system holders. Also look for them in many of your favourite downtown businesses next week. And you can always get a copy by stopping by the Downtown BIZ office at 426 Portage Avenue.

You can check out a PDF version by clicking on the cover shot below. (That delicious looking hot chocolate and cake are from Dessert Sinsations on St. Mary Avenue. So divine!)

MTC’s Gift

Last night I had the good fortune of attending MTC Warehouse’s newest production, Jake’s Gift. I’ll be the first to admit I was a bit skeptical about this one. I’ve never been a huge fan of one (wo)man shows and I’ve always been a bit bothered by adults playing children in live theatre. It just never rings true for me.

However, consider my face covered with egg after seeing Jake’s Gift. I take back all those ill-conceived, and apparently, erroneous notions.

The play, to put it in the simplest terms, is absolutely stunning. I spent the last 20 minutes trying to hold back tears, I was so moved. Based on the chorus of sniffles rippling throughout the theatre and numerous people I witnessed dabbing their eyes in the lobby after the performance, I’d guess there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

The production is set on the shores of Juno Beach where a 10-year-old girl named Isabelle awaits the 60th anniversary of D-Day. She meets a solider from Manitoba, who she befriends. Through her precocious nature, she helps him face some old demons. Played brilliantly by Julia Mackey, Isabelle flips to become numerous characters seamlessly. I swear there were moments I forgot it was just woman out on the stage.

I’m sure it’s no coincidence MTC decided to stage this one so close to Remembrance Day, and the reminder of those soldiers who fought and died for our freedom is a suitable one.

I’m told tonight’s opening is already sold out, but Jake’s Gift runs until November 20. You can purchase tickets through MTC by visiting their box office on Market Avenue or calling 942-6537.

Don’t forget the Kleenex.

Also, don’t miss today’s Groupon Deal: For just $10 you get $25 worth of comfort food and drinks at Ground Floor Urban Diner. Located in the Place Louis Riel, the popular lunch spot is great for creative, home style dishes. Go check it out!

Groupon and other stuff

A few weeks ago I mentioned a company called Team Buy, whose mandate is to offer online internet deals for local businesses. Well I thought it only fair to mention their competitor this week–Groupon, who actually have an awesome downtown deal on offer today.

Sign up to receive $50 worth of food from the Velvet Glove located in the Fairmont Winnipeg for just $25 dollars. The Velvet Glove is truly sumptuous elegance and this is an excellent deal. I’m making this my deal of the week and it’ll last for the next couple of days. There are limited quantities available, so don’t miss out!

Also, it’s Friday, so you’re probably looking for something to do this weekend. One thing you definitely need to hit up is the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. This weekend, they’re going to be playing with Chantal Kreviazuk. She’s kicking off a cross Canada tour right here starting tonight with performances on Saturday and Sunday as well.

The part I’m really looking forward to is brand new songs! Stuff you’ve never heard before (even when she was here for the Queen earlier this summer). There are still tickets available and you can get them here.

Calling all fashionistas

Lately I’ve noticed clothing swaps have become all the rage. A whole bunch of women get together, bring the clothes, shoes and accessories that no longer fit their bodies or their style and swap them with other women who think those discards are actually gold. It brings whole new meaning to the phrase “one (wo)man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure.”

With that trend in mind, MAWA (Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art) is holding their second clothing swap. Not only is this a great way to pick up some new duds for a rock bottom price, it’s a great way to support a fantastic cause.

MAWA is currently accepting donations of women’s clothing, purses, shoes and accessories for the swap until Friday, October 15 at 4pm. They are located at 611 Main Street.

The event itself happens, Friday, October 15 from 7pm-9pm when $10 gets you in the door. You are then free to walk away with anything you can carry. It’s such a great way to recycle (or to use the much more of-the-moment phrase, upcycle) and replenish your wardrobe for practically nothing.

All the proceeds will go to MAWA’s Legacy Fund to benefit women in the arts. I went to the first event in April and, let me tell you, it was insane. There were so many people there that MAWA has actually doubled the space this time to hold the masses. It was also just a ton of fun–like being a kid in a vintage candy store.

At the end of the night, what ever is left gets donated to the North End Women’s Centre, so that’s pretty cool too.

What’s the big deal?

I’m a Winnipegger and thus, I love a good deal. Don’t we all?

Today I’d like to start a new feature here at Downtown Peggy, and that’s my weekly deal. I’m going to search for sales, promotions, contests and whatever else I can find throughout downtown. I’ll be looking for help from you as well. (So this goes without saying, if you have a great deal or know of one, make sure I know so I can tell everyone!)

I’m also teaming up with a company called Teambuy.ca who are going to help me out by providing awesome downtown deals. In fact, they’ve already done their magic and are offering something really special for tomorrow.

4Play Sports Bar is going to be featuring an amazing buy where $20 gets you $45 worth of food. Now I’m no math whiz, but that sounds like a win-win to me. If you’ve never been to 4Play, read my previous post on it.

Teambuy.ca actually launches in Winnipeg tomorrow, so be sure to go there and sign up so you can receive your coupon to 4Play and plenty of other downtown merchants. (You have to sign up to get these deals.)

After you’ve eaten your fill at 4Play tomorrow evening, the Teambuy team is actually going to be appearing on a little CBC show where five millionaires invest in the brilliant (or more often kooky) ideas of others.

And another quick one before I go. Argento World of Silver in Portage Place sells tons of really beautiful jewellery–tell them you are a downtown worker (but only if you really are of course) and they’ll give you a 15% discount! Now if that’s not neighbourly, I don’t know what is.
