Top of the morning to ya laddies! Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day, and as the sign I saw at the Guinness Storehouse on my trip to Dublin a few years back, Everyone is Irish on March 17th!
So I’ll make it short and sweet and get right down to where you can go to get your Guinness on this wonderful day:
Shannon’s Irish Pub (175 Carlton Street)
A Winnipeg essential for any Irish celebration! Shannon’s will be hosting a variety of entertainment all day long: Dale Brown from Dusty Rhinos will be playing the fiddle over the lunch hour; Nathan Rogers (son of Canadian folk legend Stan Rogers) will perform in the afternoon from 4-6pm; the McConnell Irish Dancers will take the stage at 7pm and 9pm; and local bands The Lousy Lovers, Two Socks, and Diamond Joe Dutame will all perform throughout the evening from 8pm to 2am (best hope you don’t have any early Friday morning meetings!). Cover is $10 at the door.
Also on special all day long: Jameson whiskey, fish n’ chips burgers, bangers n’ mash, and shepherd’s pie.
Garrick Hotel (287 Garry Street) – It’s true what they say about the luck of the Irish, because this glorious day coincides with the Garrick Hotel’s Karaoke Thursdays! Best be ready for a night of howling the lyrics to Galway Girl and Whiskey in the Jar!
The Pint (274 Garry Street)
Right across the street there will be two floors of DJs playing music all night long, $4 green beer, $6 Guinness, and traditional Irish Guinness stew is on special. And as an extra special treat, The Pint’s patio will be open!
Pony Corral (444 St. Mary Avenue)
Dine and dance like the Irish with performances by DJ James Falk and the McConnell School of Irish Dancers. All your favourite Irish feats – stew, green beer, and fish n’ chips – will be served all night long!
Tavern United (345 Graham Avenue)
For a little post Hart rock concert fun, get yourself over to Tavern United for more green beer, Guinness and special performance by the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band!
Unique Ireland (2nd Floor, 1 Forks Market Road)
If your closet is lacking something green to wear tomorrow, Unique Ireland at the Forks has all the Irish swag you can think of! From Celtic t-shirts, to leprechaun hats, and Guinness beer steins, they’ve got all the fixings to have you dreaming of a trip to the Emerald Isle. And don’t forget to grab a bag of Tayto Cheese & Onion crisps—an Irish delicacy. Open 9:30am to 6:30pm.
For a little post-Paddy’s day fun, take part in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, Mach 19 from 2-5pm! Dress in green from head to toe and join the paper-mache celebration: tour assembles at Tavern United (345 Graham Avenue) at 2pm, departs at 3pm and wraps up at 4pm with 10% off food and drinks back at the Tavern.
If you’re like me, you’re going to want to hit up everywhere all in one night. So rest up, because tomorrow, we celebrate like the Irish!
