Winnipeg Portrait Prize

Winnipeg Portrait Prize

Did you know that our city has a club called the Winnipeg Sketch Club? And not only that, they’ve got a LOT of history. In fact, they were founded in 1914, meaning that this year is their 100th birthday – happy birthday!

They’re celebrating their birthday with a big project to be unveiled this weekend – the first ever Winnipeg Portrait Prize. They invited artists to celebrate people who are doing great things in our community by creating a portrait of them, and all of them are going on display this weekend at the RBC Convention Centre.

First, how nice is it that they’re doing something to celebrate others on their own birthday? Very Winnipeg.

And second – if you were one of the people drawn, excited would you be? We all have LOTS photos of ourselves now (thanks, camera phones!) but how many of us actually get a portrait? That’s got to feel pretty special.

If you want to go check them out, they’re in rooms 15 and 16, Saturday 10:30 am to 8:00 pm and Sunday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm (If you go after 5:00PM tonight, there’s live music and cash bar Saturday till 8!) After that, the winner, people’s choice and finalists are being chosen, and they’ll be unveiled in the Manitoba Legislative Building 7:00 pm in the Rotunda.
