Can I get a date with Rob Lowe?

So we’ve all heard about the (in)famous hellhole tweet from Rob Lowe a few days ago. Now I think it’s nice to give people the benefit of the doubt – I don’t think he was talking about the city, and I don’t know which sports bar it was. And I totally get how frustrating it is when you’re on the edge of your seat watching a game and…they cut away. For me it’s more the Jets than basketball, but I know that feeling that makes you want to yell “Noooooo!” at the TV.

And I think it’s a total downer that for a silly reason like a badly timed news break, someone leaves with a less-than-awesome feeling about the city that I love. So I am all over a very interesting invitation I got on twitter the other day!

Another Winnipegger, @JosephRanseth, feels the same way I do and came up with what I think is a brilliant plan: before he leaves, show Rob Lowe around the city and give him the true VIP experience. And he asked if I’d come along on a double date as an unofficial downtown Winnipeg tour guide!

How could I turn down an invite like that? I’m in, obviously – but there’s two hurdles.

First: we’ve got to convince Rob to come out with us. So I’m hoping you’ll all help me with the word out – if you’re on board, pass this post on to your friends!

And second: I need to come up with an itinerary of my favourite downtown places to tour – and I’m all ears for your suggestions too! Keep in mind – no one’s even taught him what a perogy is yet.

We’ve got a lot to show him! And hey, he’s open to ideas. So let’s show him what to do with his next day off 🙂

  1. St. Vital park, BDI, Grand Beach, Forks Walkway,Exchange district at night. I like to take the downtowner (free ride around downtown)

  2. I was lucky enough to have Rob sit right in front of me at the Roger Waters’ concert and the man I saw was not the one that has been talked about for the past week. He was just a person like you and me, there for the music. He even was nice to the woman who was falling over drunk in front of him and when he had security escort her out, he spoke to her for a couple of minutes (don’t think the woman even realized who he was) and then he spoke to both myself and the person beside me to explain why he had her removed. The woman was quite out of hand and Rob was quite right in having her removed from the scene. Anyway, some of the places I would suggest would be Dalnavert (doesn’t have to be all about the bars), the Mint which is a really great tour, and even Lower Fort Garry and Grand Beach. Let’s show him how lucky we are to live where we do.

  3. I walk around downtown a few mornings each week and I love what is being done in our city. I would suggest showing Rob our Hydro Building for sure, the Avenue Building, the view from St. Boniface looking downtown past our new bridge, the view of downtwon from the Higgins side of the tracks, etc. I would be happy to tour him through some of the areas as well. The only sad part is that Rob would have to wrapped up like the Michelin man in order for him not to injure himself when he falls into the holes in our streets and sidewalks. Everyone seems to be doing their best to keep us looking good, except for those in charge of our road conditions. Who ya gonna call?

  4. As someone new to Winnipeg myself, how about the legislature buildings, Baked Expectations, St. Norbert’s Market, Grand Beach and BDI as noted above, the Jazz Festival, and a river tour from the Forks.

  5. Amazing blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that
I’m completely confused .. Any tips? Bless you!
