Architecture and Design Film Fest

New downtown festival alert! If you haven’t heard about it yet, this Wednesday through Saturday, the 18-12st, is going to be the first annual Architecture and Design Film Festival.

I think we in Winnipeg are starting to appreciate how important architecture and beautiful designs are in everyday life – to me, beautiful buildings change more than just the way a street looks, but the way it feels. And I also think we’re really lucky here in Winnipeg to have an awesome and energized creative community that wants to get us talking more about design. The creative brains behind the first Architecture and Design Film Festival have brought in a whole range of movies on everything from architecture and urban design to graphics and product design – the line-up includes Urbanized and Helvetica, Koolhaas Houselife, How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster?, How to Make a Book With Steidl, My Playground, Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman and Infinite Space: The Architecture of John Lautner. (I saw Helvetica a couple of years ago and LOVED it – I don’t know where they got the idea to do an entire movie about a typeface, but it’s fantastic)

So are you a movie buff or design enthusiast? I’ve got tickets to the festival for you – just tell me one thing in the comments: what’s your favourite building in downtown Winnipeg? Bonus entry if you post a picture! 🙂 I’ll take entries all day today and close the contest at noon tomorrow to draw the winner!

More info on the festival is here:

Update: I’ve got my winner – congrats Alan! Check your email for instructions on where to get the tickets. In honour of your choice:

  1. My favourite building downtown is the Argyle Building! Its so skinny and it has twin facades! The front and back can be seen at the same time… (photo attached depicting both facades…)

  2. Hands down – my favorite building in downtown Winnipeg is the Winnipeg clinic. It’s a classic, and reminds me of watching The Jetsons when I was a kid! Check out the pic…

  3. the Red River College princess street building! it is so beautiful, and a unique fusion of 1890s and present-day Winnipeg, inside and out. take a walk through the atrium if you have the chance to!

  4. One of my favorites would have to be Union Station. I have taken many different pictures there (from Weddings to Macro shots). I love the Beaux Arts architectual style. Did you know that the Union Station was designed by Warren & Wetmore? They designed Grand Central Station in New York City.
