On the topic of downtown

As you may be aware, I like to talk about downtown. (Shocking, I know.) Thus, I wanted to draw your attention to something you might be interested in.

This weekend on CJOB, Ross McGowan from CentreVenture is going to be participating in a really interesting discussion about Winnipeg and the changing face of our downtown.

They’ll be talking about things like new construction, the preservation of heritage buildings and how downtown is emerging as a residential neighbourhood.

The show airs on Saturday, May 7 at 4 pm on CJOB

Some of the things they’ll be discussing are:

  • The history of CentreVenture
  • Main Street Revitalization
  • Creating public destinations like Central Park
  • Waterfront Drive and its residential development
  • The downtown residential grant program and the importance of getting more people living downtown
  • Tax Increment Financing

This is a really great opportunity to learn more about what’s happening in downtown and what the plans for the future look like. You’ll also hear some info on the Portage Avenue action plan–a really exciting endeavour that could change downtown as we know it.  You’ll also be able to call in and ask questions.

Tune in!

  1. There is only ONE thing that will truly revitalize downtown Winnipeg:

Our very own NHL franchise at the MTS Centre.

Until that happens, all efforts to really make downtown Winnipeg a warm, welcoming, exciting place to be after work hours is a waste of time. The efforts in previous years & decades is proof positive of that.

But don’t take my word for it. Visit any city in North America with a pro sports franchise located downtown. See the excitement & energy in the bars and restaurants before, during, and after a sporting event. You’ll see.
