Mardipeg!

Fat Tuesday is a coming, and you don’t need to be basking by the bayou to enjoy the festivities.*

Once again, Winnipeg is hosting its own Mardi Gras, right inside the Winnipeg Convention Centre. I’ve been to this in past, and it is so much fun.

I’ve also got tickets to give away to a few lucky people. If you would like two passes to the event, email me at mail@downtownpeggy.com and tell me why you’d like to go.

The Bourbon Street Band comes straight from down south, performing Motown, R&B, top 40, classic rock, and zydeco and other entertainment includes aerial acrobats, mime artist, body painter, stilt walkers, drag queens, ‘Austin Powers’ impersonator, card readers, body builders, jugglers, and more.

Obviously this is all way more fun if you get dressed up–so pull out your beads, boas and masks and get into the spirit. There will be a fashion show too and you could find yourself in the centre of the action if you’re dazzling enough.

Of course, in my mind, no party is complete without food and this event won’t disappoint.

There will be Mardi Gras specialty food like freshly-shucked oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp and even alligator. (Oh my!) Also on offer are Louisiana crab cakes and southern fried Cajun pickle spears. (Fried pickles–need I say more?)

And that’s not all–there is a full dinner and ‘a la carte’ menu available from 6pm to 10pm, featuring jambalaya, gumbo, chicken Creole, savory southern barbequed ribs, and all the ‘fixins. The late night menu after 10pm offers ‘po boy’ sandwiches, Cajun slow roasted beef, Louisiana grilled chicken, Cajun sausage on a bun and tasso ham with Creole mustard.

I’m seriously in a swoon just picturing it all.

The event takes place Feb 11&12 from 6pm to 2am and general admission is $16.

*Incidentally, I went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans many years ago… it was just about the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. You should see it one day before you die. But not this year, because now it’s too late. Go to the Convention Centre and get in the spirit for another year. You’ll have a good time–I promise.
