In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s winter. I know, I know—every single year it comes as a complete surprise when the temperature drops and the world is covered in snow. In fact, it’s snowing right now.
The good thing is that winter brings with it a whole different set of highlights—namely the Rivertrail. Without a doubt, it’s one of the city’s top attractions and the good news is that because we live in Winnipeg and not, say, Bermuda, we get to enjoy the frozen river in all its glory for several months of the year.
Last year, The Forks North Portage erected a series of Warming Huts along the river, all designed by a group of talented architects. The designs were unique and creative and totally buzz-worthy. Not surprisingly, they won all kinds of awards for this initiative and the huts were featured on news broadcasts around the world.
Well that international buzz didn’t go away this year, when they held a competition for a new series of huts. The designs came from people as far away as Egypt! They’ve now selected five designs that will be going up along the Rivertrail this winter. You can learn more about the designs and designers here, but in the meantime, I’ve pulled off a few images to share with you.
These are just amazing and I absolutely can’t wait to see them in the flesh! Or wood, ice and steel as it were….
