Urban Greenspace

A few weeks ago, Central Park officially unveiled its new design. After a multi-million dollar makeover, a place that was once a haven for drugs and gangs, has now been given new purpose and new life. Instead of the sound of gunshots, there are now the cries of happy children in the air. I’d defy anyone to witness that transformation and say downtown isn’t changing for the better.

Last week while we were having our unseasonably warm summer/fall I took a wander over and was struck by just how beautiful it really is around there. Cute character homes, the stunning facade of Knox United Church and the impressive backdrop of the Manitoba Hydro Building really puts you in the mind of an urban oasis.

There are now tons of activities, a jungle gym, hills, an astroturf playing surface (which I’ve heard will be turned into a skating rink in the winter), and a water park (obviously, that’s just for summer). My favourite feature was actually the double long slides that have been built up on little hills, so the ride down, even for someone past the age of four, was actually kind of terrifying in that delightful way. (Yes, I went on the slide. I enjoyed it, and I’d do it again. Don’t look at me like that.)

Here’s a photo of some kids playing. Isn’t that cute?

  1. Government money put to good use for our community… wow sounds great! Although I don’t have any children at home now, I live in the area and I’m curious to see the new space. Will check it out today! Thanks for community update!

  2. Please let me know if you’re looking for a author for your site. You have some really great articles and I think I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d love to write some content for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please send me an e-mail if interested. Thanks!
