It turns out good things do happen to those who wait. I said my prayers, did my penance, crossed my fingers, crossed my toes and now, finally, Wicked the Musical is coming to Winnipeg. I’m just so excited I could do a merry jig down the Yellow Brick Road.
Wicked is the true (and I do mean true) story of the Wicked Witch of the West. You might know her as the cackling crone that met with her untimely end thanks to a cauldron of water in the Wizard of Oz. Except the story that everyone thinks they know, isn’t the true story of Elphaba, the green-skinned witch. She was grossly misunderstood in L. Frank Baum’s tale and a few years ago, author Gregory Maguire wrote a book to that effect.
Eventually, his amazing novel (on my top 10 list of faves and a can’t-miss) was turned into a musical that has been touring the globe to rave reviews. The story follows Elphaba’s life from her birth in a politically tumultuous land of Oz. Along the way she meets a host of characters including Glinda, the good witch. It all happens long before Dorothy drops into their lives.
Wicked the Musical is doing a five-city Canadian tour next summer and will be hitting Winnipeg, August 24, 2011. My only lament is that I have to wait so long, but I guess I’ll just have to practice patience. After all, I’ve already waited this long.
Stay tuned for more details on tickets in the coming months. You can bet I’m not going to shut up about this for a very long time.
