I’m usually skeptical of people who claim they LOVE to exercise. (Same with those who claim they LOVE broccoli.) Exercise and broccoli aren’t there for our enjoyment, they’re there to make us healthy and to make us feel guilty. Or at least that’s how I perceive the universe’s plan. I think people say they love these things either to convince themselves or others. But maybe that’s just me.
Having said all that, one of the things I actually do enjoy doing from time to time is running. I’ve done a marathon, a couple of half marathons and some shorter 10km runs in my day, and well, truth be told, I’ve always had an awesome time.
That’s why I was so excited to learn downtown is getting a brand new race this year dubbed the Winnipeg 10&10. Two routes–a 10 miler and a 10 km–start and end in Memorial Park and wind their way down picturesque Wellington Crescent and Assiniboine Park. I really like the 10 mile route because it’s such a unique distance. As far as I know, there aren’t any other races doing it in the province.
The race is courtesy of the good folks at the Running Room who’ve been working very hard to get this off the ground. It’s happening September 12 and early bird registration ends Aug 10. It’s only $20 for the 10 km and $25 for the 10 miler. If you’ve ever participated in a race of this type, you know that’s an amazing deal especially since it includes a technical t-shirt, finishers medal and food and entertainment at the finish line.
The flat and fast course is perfect for first-timers wanting to give it a shot or seasoned veterans looking to achieve a personal best.
You can sign up at the Running Room website here. They’re also looking for volunteers to help out, so if you’ve got a bad knee or just want to get that special runners feeling without having to do any actual sweating, you should contact either Craig (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Chayan (email@example.com) at the Downtown BIZ at 958-4640 and get your name on the list.
See you at the finish line.
