To start off today’s post, I’d like to express just how much fun I’m having right now. I love summer in downtown. There just seems to be an endless amount of things to do. Forget going to the cottage for the weekend, the action is all happening right here in the city.
Of course it’s Fringe time and I’ve practically blinded myself hitting up so many plays this weekend. I’ve got a few picks so far that I’d recommend: Countries Shaped Like Stars, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Cactus: The Seduction, P.S. 69, and Look Ma, No Hands! I’m linking you to the CBC reviews because they do a better job of reviewing Fringe shows than I could ever hope to (plus I’m pretty lazy). Besides, you don’t want to take just my word for it.
Coming up this week is the Out to Lunch Street Festival happening on Wednesday at lunch time. They’re closing off Edmonton Street from Portage Avenue to Graham Avenue and the concert will take place right behind the Manitoba Hydro building. Come see Aboriginal singer/songwriter Don Amero and browse the outdoor market. Last year they had free cookies… (I’m just sayin’.)
Also happening this summer, Portage Place is doing something pretty creative with their Happening Hour. Notwithstanding their very cute and clever play on words, they’re offering up some fantastic deals. From now until August 15, the mall’s merchants will be offering discounts, freebies and contests, ONLY from 5pm-6pm. If you ever needed a reason to stay and shop a little after work (as if anyone needs a reason to shop), then this is it. Pick up dinner, pick up flowers for that someone special, or pick up some new shoes. You couldn’t go wrong if you tried.
